Este pequeño libro, publicado en 1897, es la declaración de principios de Dewey en el comienzo de su reflexión sobre la educación. Precedediendo en casi 20 años a Democracy and education, encontramos en él los elementos esenciales del acercamiento de Dewey al problema educativo. La importancia del aspecto psicológico y sociológico, la necesiadd de partir de la naturaleza e intereses del niño, la concepción de la educación como un proceso vital en sí y no como una preparación para el futuro, la escuela como una institución social necesaria y como espacio educativo promoviendo el progreso y la reforma social son elementos presentes en este importante texto.
El educador chileno Dario Salas realizó la primera traducción al español, publicada en la Revista de la Asociación de Educación Nacional en 1908. Esta versión corresponde a la traducción de Lorenzo Luzuriaga, hecha en 1931.
